An open letter
The fun thing about blogging is that reality can be adjusted bit to fit the story best. The people who know Moses know that this blog is usally a few days or even weeks behind reality.
The situation is this.
Moses has long recovered from his original trip to the vet. he is past his incontanance, and has demonstrated the ability to control.
He has however, for the last few months, started urinating all over the house. I mean, ALL over. Every room, on cloths, on appliances, the vacume cleaner, the amplifier, coats. He has not used his litter box at all in the last month.
We have tried for months to help him, to train him, with the advice of books and doctors (and yes 5-Cat, we tried google too). We have spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills and cleaning trying to correct this.
We don't think this is jealousy either. Moses gets on surprisingly well with the baby, and this behaviour preceeds her birth. But the Baby is the problem. We will not have her rolling and crawling around a house (not a room, a house) soaked in cat urine.
That means Moses has to go.
We have an aquaitnance who used to raise horses. She's long since retired, but her barn stilll remains, and is home to several cats. Moses moved into this barn on Tuesday. He gets stinky goodness every day and lots of crunchyfood.
Understand, we agree with all of you. Pets are not disposable. It would have been cruel to leave moses just out of the house, at the mercy of the ally cats around (Bibs and Graymalkin ARE real), and exposed in the elements. A new home was the only choice left.
We cried as we drove Moses to his new home, and cried as we drove home without him. We mourn the fact taht we may not be able to have another cat in this house. I've never lived without one.
We ended Moses' online story on what we hoped was a high note. I intended this blog to go on for years, but with the cat gone, it would be too painful to continue to write every day. Moses may still post ocasionally on Catnip Annonymous and the attack of teh tabbies. he may even post here once in awhile, but this blog as a daily project is sadly over. We can not tell you what it means to us that Moses found so many friends in teh blogsphere. We never imagined he would have this many visitors, or so many others saddened with us at his departure.
Moses is no longer with us, but he is alive, and has a chance to be happy, to make new friends....and of course to raise up a new army to take over the world.

I understand your position and concerns, and I understand your grief. We will pray through our tears that Moses will have a good life and find happiness in his new home. My heart still breaks for all of you.
I too understand your predicament and know it was a hard decision to make. However, he is an indoor cat and relegating him to a BARN, is NOT a good solution (although better than being totally abandoned). I wish you could find someone that would let him live inside. Please let us know how he's doing.

we're sorry it had to come to this. my Mom had a cat once that had to go away because of the same problem. they tried everything, just everything. we will pray that Moses will be happy at his new place. we hope that people will be friendly with him, as he is used to having them around.

We're glad Moses got a new home where he can have stinky goodness and lots of crunchies! Mom had to give two kitties to a lady with a barn once cuz of the same problem. Some kitties just won't use the box. I don't understand that tho, unless the box is never cleaned or something and I'm sure yall didn't do that. We'll say lots of purrayers for Moses to be happy in his new home and for yall to be happy to and efurrybody be ok and safe.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation to us all. I'm very sad that it had to come to this; but, I do agree that your child comes first. I know that I wouldn't want *any* child of mine to constantly be exposed to waste.

Oh dear... I'm deeply sorry it had to come to this. Giving up a beloved pet has got to be one of the most painful things to do. I hope Moses will be deeply loved where he is. May he always be happy and comfortable. And I look forward to hearing from him again.

If there wasn't a new baby to consider, I'd be ripping you a new one. But yes, the baby comes first, and you can't have a cat peeing all over everything all the time with a little person in the house. Sooner or later she's going to be mobile (later than you'd hope, sooner than you can believe...) and pee-covered everything is not conducive to a healthy child.
Look, the rest of us can be judgemental as hell, but we're not living in your situation right now. *I* know, deep down, that you wouldn't give Moses up if there was a better way, and you wouldn't place him somewhere he'd be miserable. I'm very sorry you had to come to that decision, but you had to do what was best for the baby.

Make sure to buy one of those black lights if you haven't already...that way there's no spot left in the corners of the carpet for you little one to find. I wish you guys well and be sure to say hello every now and then!

I am so sorry to hear about Moses. No one can fault you for the decision you made. You certainly did your best to solve the situation. The baby does come first. And Moses will adjust to his new home.

As much as some may think you put your own needs before Moses, I think it's the opposite. My belief is that Moses loves you a lot and wouldn't want to put you, the new baby, or himself through such a stressful situation around his health.
I am glad to know he will have another chance at a good life. Being in the garage--just feet away from those he loves, would be a tough, tough existance.

I don't know what to say. It's all been said. I think you've made the right choice for yourselves and Moses. I hope when you are ready, you will get another cat. I've known people who would have simply had him put to sleep. At least you've tried to find a better home for him.

My Eponine, I think, for years thought the world was a painting, only seeing it from a window. As we moved to a home and had a yard, she loved to explore and wander. I think Moses will enjoy too!

Our condolences on your hard choice. Our Mom knows how you feel and how horrible a decision like that is. When our Dad was stationed in Hawaii, Mom had to find new homes for her two babies (poodies) and cried and cried and felt guilty for years even though they went a good home.
Mom and Dad had a new Kinsey kitten and couldn't afford the $1500.00 it would have been to pay for the quarantine that was required then. Now, thank goodness, the laws have been changed if your pet has the right vacination record the quarentine is no longer required. Many pets and people were happy.
Hopefully Moses will adjust just fine; if not maybe the Meezer's Mom can help out. Keep in touch with Moses and all of us.

Our hearts are breaking for Moses...to have to leave his "forever" home. But we too understand the situation. If you ever visit Moses, please keep us updated and give him a big kitty kiss from all of us!!!
We don't know what to say; everyone before us has done such a wonderful job. We wish Moses the best in his new home & we wish his people peace in their very difficult decision.
We don't have a real baby, just our furbabies, so we have the "luxury" of being able to have a bit more time to figure out why Angel does the same thing. We are fortunate for that and for the fact that she has chosen only one spot, on the carpet that needed replacement anyhow, and that underneath it is our 20's era period original hardwood, if it is not already stained and saturated beyond repair. Yes, we'll have to replace the carpet, but are still looking for the same answers you did for Moses.
I have been told however (though we always thought her problem was mostly neurotic as she has often been a very "needy" kitty) that its possible Angel has colitis. We'll spend the money to find out for sure as there is treatment available, but I'm told one of the first signs is improper or negligent litter box use (or lack thereof)
As much as I hate for her to have an illness, its a bit more comforting than thinking that she's just neurotic and we'll always have to deal with this behavior, as an illness could be helped, while being neurotic is hard to fix. Since she uses no other spot than this one, we are at least comforted to know that if we remove the carpet, cleaning up will be much easier if she continues to use the same spot, carpet free. I hope its an issue we can solve, but I've often sensed that Angel is not a kitty that will be with us long, because of her issues. She's never been really "sick" but she never seems "well" emotionally and otherwise, and I do worry about losing her early and what happened to her in her short life before we got her that brought her to this point.
So my heart really does go out to you because we are going through the same thing, except that we are lucky she only uses one area, not the entire house, and there is a chance that we can fix the problem, and no babies are involved.
I don't know what I'd' do in your situation, so I certainly can't judge or comment on that. We visit with the farm cats on hubby's parents farm every time we go there and its always a joy, they still have all the personality and love that a house cat has, just a few more difficulties and a shorter life span. And its always sad to go and learn that one has left for the bridge and beyond. Its a totally different lifestyle and I hope he'll adjust well and find happiness there. I do especially hope though that if someone is serioulsy offering to take him into their home that it would work out well that way as well.
I just don't know what I'd do. I think I'd never recover to lose one of my babies, they are the world to me, because I could not have real babies. So for me it would be much more difficult to do, but always my real child would come first as well. No solution will ever be perfect, because it will always mean you had to say goodbye to Moses and I know how broken hearted you must be.
Please Moses, be okay, feel the love all your kitty friends and beans are sending you and know how much people are thinking of you...

I know I'm a year late to the story, but great solution! All of my cats have been given a permanently open cat door so they can live and die like cats. A barn is a great place for the little, furry predators. Lots of mousies and strange insects to pounce on and eat and a bunch of kitty friends, too! I'm sorry you had to say goodbye, but at least it wasn't with a needle going into the cat's neck in a vet's office.
By the way, you've got a lot more patience than I would have had. I would have lasted about two days. Cat urine in the house is unacceptable.
